Wild Fire

This house has two windows
And I, like a migrant,
Move between them
To escape the burning sun.

In the morning, I sit at the northern window
And repair poetry
With my talking computer.
In the evening, I go to the southern window
Sit on my rocking chair
And listen to my talking book.

But today, the air has fever
Like a swollen body,*
The sun is an ugly wound*
Opening its mouth
And the house smells of smoke.

A fire has caught the skirt of the city.
Right now, hundreds of firefighters
Are engaging with the wild fire
In groves, canyons and towns,
And thousands of homeless men, women and children
Have moved to shelters
With their horses, dogs and cats.

I wish it would rain.
Then I could sit
At this window sometimes
And sometimes at the other one
And listen to the sound of the rain
Falling equally over houses,
Both burned and unburned.

آتش وحشی

این خانه دو پنجره دارد
و من چون کوچ نشینان
میان آن دو در رفت و آمدم
تا از سوزشِ آفتاب بگریزم.

صبح ها کنار پنجره ی شمالی می نشینم
و با رایانه ی سخنگویم
شعر تعمیر می کنم.
عصرها کنار پنجره ی جنوبی می روم
روی صندلیِ گهواره ای می نشینم
و به کتابِ سخنگویم گوش می دهم.

اما امروز, هوا تب دارد
چون تنی ورم کرده,*
خورشید, زخمِ زشتی ست*
که دهان باز کرده
و خانه بوی دود می دهد.

آتشی دامنِ شهر را گرفته
صدها آتش نشان اکنون
در بیشه ها, دره ها و شهرکها
با آتش وحشی درگیرند
و هزاران مرد, زن و کودکِ بی خانه
با اسبها, سگها و گربه هایشان
به پناهگاه ها کوچ کرده اند.

ایکاش باران ببارد
آنگاه می توانم گاهی کنار این پنجره
و گاهی کنار آن پنجره بنشینم
و به صدای باران گوش دهم
که بر خانه های سوخته و ناسوخته
بیکسان می بارد.
