Addressed to PEN International, its Member Centres, and Writers Around the World

We, the Iranian writers, poets, and members of the literary community who are signatories to this statement, express our profound grief, anger, and sense of moral responsibility as we strongly condemn the killing of defenceless Iranian citizens during the protests of Dey 1404 (January 2026).

We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained protesters and political prisoners, and we emphasise the urgent need to halt the ongoing killings and executions of citizens without delay.

The people of Iran took to the streets peacefully to protest rising prices, unemployment, and the collapse of their livelihoods. They were met instead with live ammunition, violent repression, and deadly force. These victims were neither armed nor violent; they were ordinary people burdened by the struggle for bread and survival. Not only were their voices ignored, but their very right to life was taken away.

According to reports based on hospital records and publicly available information, thousands of people — women and men, children and the elderly — have been killed during this crackdown. Thousands more have been injured, disappeared, or detained. Many detainees are being subjected to torture and ill-treatment and remain at risk of harsh sentences, including execution.

The killing of citizens who demand a dignified life is not only a clear and grave violation of fundamental human rights, but also constitutes a crime against humanity.
It is a stark manifestation of the systematic suppression of freedom of expression, the right to protest, and other basic human freedoms.

The silencing of citizens’ voices is a continuation of the same policy that, for years, has targeted writers, poets, journalists, intellectuals, and artists.

For us, writing is not merely an act of expression; it is a defence of humanity and an act of bearing witness against injustice, death, and falsehood.

We call upon all PEN centres, independent writers, and organisations dedicated to the defence of freedom of expression worldwide to unequivocally condemn these crimes against unarmed civilians, to stand in solidarity with the people of Iran, and to ensure that the blood of protesters is not forgotten amid political expediency and calculation.

نامه نویسندگان، شاعران و اهل قلم ایران خطاب به پن جهانی، انجمن های عضو و دیگر اهل قلم جهان

ما، نویسندگان و شاعران ایرانی و دیگر اهل قلم که امضاکننده‌ی این بیانیه هستیم،

با اندوه، خشم و احساس مسئولیتی عمیق، کشتار شهروندان بی‌دفاع ایران در دی‌ماه ۱۴۰۴ (ژانویه ۲۰۲۶) را به‌شدت محکوم می‌کنیم.

ما خواستار آزادی فوری و بی‌قیدوشرط همه معترضان بازداشت‌شده و همچنین زندانی‌های سیاسی هستیم. بر ضرورت جلوگیری فوری از ادامه کشتار و اعدام شهروندان تأکید می‌کنیم.

مردم ایران، برای اعتراض به گرانی، بیکاری و فروپاشی معیشت به شیوه‌ی مسالمت‌آمیز به خیابان‌ها آمدند، ولی با گلوله، سرکوب خونین و خشونتی مرگبار پاسخ گرفتند.

این قربانیان نه مسلح بودند و نه خشونت‌طلب؛ مردمی بودند با غم نان. نه تنها صدایشان شنیده نشد، که حق زیستن نیز از ایشان گرفته شد.

بنا بر گزارش‌هایی متکی بر اسناد بیمارستانی و اطلاعات منتشرشده، هزاران نفر؛ زن و مرد، کودک و سالمند، در جریان سرکوب، جان خود را از دست داده‌اند.

هزاران نفر مجروح، مفقود و نیز بازداشت شده‌اند. بسیاری از بازداشت‌شدگان زیر آزار و شکنجه، در انتظار صدور حکم‌اند و نیز در خطر اعدام.

کشتار شهروندانی که خواستار زندگی شرافتمندانه‌اند، نه تنها نقض آشکار و فاحش حقوق بنیادین بشر، که جنایت علیه بشریت است.

این کشتار رژیم نشانه‌ای از سرکوب سازمان‌یافته آزادی بیان، حق اعتراض و دیگر حقوق اولیه انسانی است.

خاموش‌کردن صدای شهروندان، تداوم همان سیاستی است که سال‌هاست نویسندگان، شاعران، روزنامه‌نگاران، اهل قلم و هنرمندان را هدف قرار داده است.

نوشتن، برای ما، فقط نوشتن نیست؛ دفاع از انسان است و شهادت دادن در برابر بی‌عدالتی و مرگ و دروغ.

ما از همه‌ی انجمن‌های پن، نویسندگان آزاد و نهادهای مدافع آزادی بیان در جهان می‌خواهیم

که این جنایت علیه شهروندان غیرنظامی را به صراحت محکوم کنند.

در کنار مردم ایران بایستند و اجازه ندهند خون معترضان در هیاهوی سیاست و مصلحت فراموش شود.
