There’s no question that the Trump Administration will take aim at every facet of the federal government’s climate efforts—he campaigned on it, and Project 2025 outlined in detail a number of steps, right down to hobbling the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration because its temperature readings helped fuel the demand for climate action. The real question is whether he’ll be able to dismantle the Inflation Reduction Act, which is scheduled to provide a decade’s worth of funding for clean-energy efforts. That pot of money—perhaps as much as a trillion dollars—represents the only substantial climate-fighting work Congress has ever done. Much of the money so far has been spent in red districts—which may provide some support. Expect an effort to protect the most fossil-fuel-friendly provisions—billions for things like carbon capture at power plants—and to strip out support for electric vehicles, heat pumps, and solar panels.
