Anniversary in Rome

We go to Rome
To celebrate our twentieth anniversary
In the Mithraeum.*
Walking there,
We stop by a tavern
And order Aperol Spritzes.
Outside the window
A pair of doves
Is making love.
Toast to the doves!
Toast to the doves!
Toast to us!
Tomorrow we go to morning service
When Papa Francis
Releases his doves.
But now we must get to the Mithraeum
To learn the mystery of love
From the Persian Mithra.

* Mithraeum was the temple of Mithras in the Roman Empire. Roman Mithras originated from the Persian Mithra, the God of friendship and contract.

سی‌و‌دو شعر برای وندی
سی‌و‌دو.
سالگرد در رم
مجید نفیسی
به رم می‌رویم
تا بیستمین سالگردمان را
در مهرخانه جشن بگیریم.*
قدم‌زنان در راه
به نوشگاهی سر‌می‌زنیم
و سفارش پیش‌نوشی می‌دهیم.
آنسوی پنجره
جفتی کبوتر
عشق می‌بازند.
نوش به کبوتران!
نوش به کبوتران!
نوش به خودمان!
فردا به نیایش بامدادی می‌رویم
وقتی بابا فرانسیس
کبوترانش را رها می‌کند.
اما اینک باید به مهرخانه شویم
تا رمز عشق را
از مهر پارسی بیاموزیم.

This is Sonya. It has been a long time since you and I exchanged words. In a moment of very early waking up, before dawn, I discovered your 32 poems for your American Love. I did not read them all yet, but wanted to tell you that I love in every each one I read so far. These are great poems. If you already have a book published with those poems, I would like to buy it.

Dear Majid, thank you for responding to me. Last night I read all 32 poems (some of them more than once or twice). I was a bit sad coming to a last poem in the series and wished there were more! All of them were so meaningful and a great testimony to love. You reminded me what a great poet is about and I thank you for that. Also, no matter what is happening in one's life, with good poetry things get a different perspective and I am thankful for your poems. Keep writing knowing that there are so many of us out there who would feed on your words.
