Marino Grimani receiving the Persian ambassador c. 1600. Venice, in the Doge's Palace, Artist: Gabriele Caliari

Gabriele Caliari (1568–1631) was an Italian of the late-Renaissance period. He was the eldest son of Paolo Veronese, was born in 1568, and died of the plague.

Marino Grimani was the 89th Doge of Venice, reigning from 26 April 1595 until his death.

Restored in 1978

Although there is only one known painting signed by Veronese’s son Gabriele Caliari, this canvas is attributed to him on the basis of style. Commemorating the reception of Persian diplomats in 1603, the painting thus expands the iconographic programs celebrating the Republic’s history and values by representing the diplomatic homage of an eastern empire.

Important visitors to the Doge’s Palace would have seen these paintings while awaiting audience with the Doge and would have been reminded of the powerful self-image of the Serenissima.
