MANILA -- An Iranian beauty queen was arrested following an Interpol red notice against her, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said Sunday.
The red notice against Bahare Zare Bahari was based on a criminal case for assault, which allegedly happened in the Philippines, filed against her in Iran by a fellow Iranian.
Bahari remains under the custody of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) and could not be sent back to Iran as she has a pending application for asylum, according to DOJ spokesperson Undersecretary Markk Perete.
"No, she won’t be sent back just yet and not until her application for asylum is resolved. BI may have set her return for Iran before she filed her asylum application," he said.
On Wednesday, an Iranian man was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport for going into a fit of rage after he was prohibited from speaking with Bahari.
