The Earth Has Become Drunk

After the 1994 Northridge earthquake

The earth has become drunk
And slams the doors.
There’s the sound of falling dishes
And red horses’ neigh,
And in the dark
I am looking for a piece of my sleep.

Will I put Nooshin's frame
Back on the mantel,
To remember the hills of Evin?*
Will I hear again
My clanging printer?
And will I talk to my laptop?
Will Azad ride his bike again?
And will I put on my skates?
Will my books return to their shelves?
And will the blinds be pulled up again?

I hear the sounds outside
From within my mother's womb.
I grab onto the darkness
Dangling from a white umbilical cord.
There's the sound of car alarms.
The Tibetan neighbor is praying.
And the Mexican girls,
Clutching the skirt of the door,
Are yelling, “Mami! Mami!”
I want to come back
On the night of my funeral,
Like Tom Sawyer.
I will hide under the bed
To hear what people say
And will see my corpse dangling
Beneath the loose planks of the door.

I want to escape from my grave.
I stand in the doorway,
And the earth is calling me inside her.

زمین مست کرده است

پس از زمین‌لرزه‌ی نورث ریج در ۱۹۹۴

زمین مست کرده است
و درها را به‌هم‌می‌کوبد.
صدای ریختن بشقابها می‌آید
و شیهه‌ی اسبهای سرخ
و من در تاریکی
به دنبال تکه‌ای از خواب خود می‌گردم.

آیا دوباره قابِ نوشین را سر رَف خواهم گذاشت
تا یاد "تپه‌های اوین" با من بماند؟
آیا دوباره قژقاژ دستگاه چاپم را خواهم شنید
و با واژه‌نگارم حرف خواهم زد؟
آیا آزاد دوباره دوچرخه‌اش را خواهد راند
و من اسکیتهایم را به پا خواهم کرد؟
آیا کتابها به قفسه‌ها باز خواهند گشت
و کرکره‌ها دوباره بالا خواهند رفت؟

از درون زُهدان مادرم
صداهای بیرون را می‌شنوم.
به تاریکی چنگ می‌زنم
و از بند نافِ سفیدی آویزانم.
صدای دزدگیر ماشینها می‌آید
همسایه‌ی تبتی دعا می‌خواند
دختران مکزیکی، دامن در را گرفته‌اند
و فریاد می‌کشند:"مامی! مامی!"
می‌خواهم چون تام سایر
به شب عزای خود برگردم
زیر تخت قایم شوم
تا همه‌ی حرفها را بشنوم
و جسد خود را ببینم
که زیر لنگه‌های بی‌لنگرِ در
تاب می‌خورد.

می‌خواهم از گور خود بگریزم.
در آستانه‌ی در ایستاده‌ام
و زمین مرا به درون خود می‌خوانَد.
