IranWire:
The U.S. Senate has voted down a resolution that sought to stop military operations against Iran and require Congress to approve any further action. With the war between the U.S./Israel and Iran now in its sixth day, Republican senators opposed the measure, preventing it from moving forward.
In a 53-to-47 vote, the Senate blocked the resolution, which sought to stop the air campaign and limit the powers of President Donald Trump.
Reuters reported that nearly all Republican senators voted against the resolution, with only one breaking ranks, while all but one Democrat supported it. Republicans currently maintain a narrow majority in the Senate.
The two senators who crossed party lines were Republican Rand Paul, who backed efforts to limit the president’s war powers, and Democrat John Fetterman, who supported continuing the military campaign. At the center of the debate is the War Powers Act of 1973, which requires a president to withdraw U.S. forces from hostilities within 60 days unless Congress formally authorizes the action. Trump and his allies, however, argue that the strikes fall within his constitutional authority as Commander-in-Chief to safeguard American interests.
The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the resolution one day later. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that they had briefed Congress on the military operations both on the eve of the initial attacks and again on Tuesday.
The “briefing” mentioned refers to the “Gang of Eight” - a group of eight congressional leaders who are privy to highly classified intelligence. Critics argue that a briefing is not the same as a formal declaration of war, which is a power specifically granted to Congress by the Constitution.
Domestic and international media outlets reported that on the sixth day of the war, both sides carried out strikes on targets in Iran and Israel. Reuters said that early on Thursday, March 5, a barrage of Iranian missiles fired toward Israel forced millions of residents into bomb shelters. At the same time, Iranian media reported multiple explosions across Tehran and other cities as a result of ongoing military strikes.
