Iran confirmed on Monday the death of Abolfazl Nikouei, known as “Haj Younes,” a senior commander of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force, during the 12-day war between Iran and Israel.

The confirmation came during Nikouei’s funeral ceremony in Tehran on Monday.

According to Tasnim News Agency, Nikouei was killed in an attack in Tehran last week.

Nikouei was a senior commander in the Quds Force and had maintained an active presence in Syria for more than eight years.

He was reportedly among the closest associates of Qasem Soleimani, the former Quds Force commander, and played a key role in coordinating Iranian forces deployed to Syria.

At Monday’s funeral, Nikouei’s father said, “My son waited 40 years for martyrdom.”

The Quds Force is the overseas arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and is responsible for operations beyond Iranian borders.
