Tina and her teen, J.J., who is trans, have lived in the Portland area of Maine for nine years. Tina had planned to spend the rest of her life there. Then, in January, President Donald Trump issued an executive order aimed at restricting access to gender-affirming care for minors. Reading the title of the order, “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation,” confirmed a feeling Tina had been having that the U.S. was becoming an unsafe place for her and J.J. to live.

Tina began looking at their options. Which countries offered legal protections for trans people? What would J.J. think? What about their house, her garden, their pets, their friends, and the life they had built together?
