The Killer of Iran’s Premier gets pardon and pat from a religious leader

Even in topsy-turvy Iran it seemed a remarkable social whirl for a confessed murderer. Just 21 months before, Khalil Tahmassebi (above, right), a Moslem terrorist, had shot to death Iran’s moderate pro-Western premier, Ali Razmara. Tahmassebi was sentenced to prison. But in the chaos which followed the assassination Iran’s nationalists, helped by the terrorists, came to power under Premier Mossadegh. Last Month they pardoned Tahmasebi. 

A free man, he promptly called on the Mullah Kashani, fanatic Iranian spiritual leader and président of Parliament. The Mullah called him « …a brave son of Islam » and patted his beard in fond praise. Then after lunching with Navab Safavi, terrorist chief now in jail under a sort of benevolent custody , Tahmassebi accepted Premier Mohammed Mossadegh’s invitation to come over for a friendly chat. Finally the smiling Tahmassebi who is going back to his trade of carpentry, sent word to the court that he wants an audience with the Shah himself.
