He had a confused understanding of Iran's history like most western thinkers.
He is the more sophisticated version of France's BHL.

He sees the Shah as some South American dictator ... largely thanks to RP who greeted him as a simple "Citizen" ...
The 'dictator' visage of the Shah is a creation of the liberal media. The same liberals (ergo Democrats) that decided the shah should 'go' and be replaced by Khomeini. I think babak kalhor attempted to show a glimpse of this in his documentary "A dying king" (available for streaming on Amazon Prime)
I agree. Hitchens had a somewhat skewed understanding of Iran. As do many Iran experts.
