The University of Texas researchers identified Iran as the source of GPS spoofing in the Middle East. This manipulation causes airliners to falsely indicate their location to pilots, potentially leading them to enter Iranian airspace unknowingly. Leland Vittert says such a scenario could be exploited by Iran to either compel an airliner to land for hostage-taking or to justify shooting it down.
