To be precise, this is the 3rd phase of the war on terror statred after 911. The objective is to eradicate the epicenter of the terror which resides in the IRI regime! The outcome(s) of the riots will depend upon the wisdom and cleverness of the leadership(s) of this movement and ultimately on the citizens who are carrying the bulk of the burden! There is going to be a little bit of everything in the choices plus some more....! Sit tight, hope for the best, and prepare for the worst!
None of the above! This is an organized, with a clear leadership of Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, popular uprising in the making for the past several years! While many have been trivilizing and marginalizing RP for the past few years, he has been vigorously and patiently spearheading this movement by working with the people on the ground ignoring all the negative jabs the pundits and critics have been throwing at him! Go ahead laugh and scuff at it as much as you want - the fact of the matter is that you need to admit it that the movement has cut you by surprise while your pants down! :-)
A military coup had a real potential before people went on the streets. Now it is practically cancelled and the most they can do is to support Iranian protesters.
Like Islamic devolution, we can discuss the ‘cause’ of this unrest for the next forty years. But a revolution -by its definition- cannot have a ‘single’ cause.
I think RP was caught off guard as much as anybody else. Yes he was active in communicating with the activists inside Iran all these years but his roadmap had nothing to do with what actually happened. So we cannot claim it was under his leadership.
Infact, his roadmap was almost 100% dependant to ‘international’ action and most likely here we are facing a situation that Trump will have the last word.
The only person who could move the lower class across the country -other than the mullahs- was and is the king. And what defines these protests as ‘revolution’ is exactly the presence of the forgotten ones on the street. Although this is a natural base for a Persian monarch. RP never made an effort to utilize it.
I think what ignited their presence on the street was not RP, but most likely the recent activities of Ahmadinejad who -notwithstanding his economic competence- was perceived as a supporter of the forgotten ones. But it wasn’t ‘organized’ by him. His recent protest as an active social discourse, enticed the forgotten ones to take action without him having any control over it. As I said, if these people choose a figurehead, by the nature of things it would be RP.
So add this to other hypothesis to discuss for the next forty years!
I am praying for a coup, its the least destructive path. A coup on Monday, arrest and execution of IRI leaders on Tuesday, people going back to work on Wednesday. Obviously over simplified but you get the point.

What will happen next? None of the above. It will take much more activism and effort to pull down a regime as heinous as the Islamic Republic. Not just a few nights of protests. And mind you, Tehran was largely silent! Most of the action was in the sharestans.
40 years has made the Islamic Republic very adept at suppressing dissent.
If and when I see people spill into the Seda va Sima HQ and take over the IRIB airwaves with force, that's when I know that there might be a shimmering sign of hope after all.
But this? These unrests? Theyre just some pissed off disadvantaged people letting off steam. Be patient now folks. 4shanbeh Soori is not far away. We're almost there.
I actually felt pity for those who were shouting "Reza Shah Roohat Shaad".
Looking at them, I was thinking to myself "goh khordeed enghelaab kardeed, ahmaghaa! Shah az saretoon ziyaadi bood."
Then again, it really wasnt their fault. It's that disease called ESLAM that ruined everything. Destroyed Iran. And we have the Safavids and Qajars to thank that for.
