IranWire:

An Iranian psychiatrist, writer, and civil activist has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison on charges including “attempting to strengthen and confirm the Israeli government.”

Naser Hemmati, a resident of Abdanan in western Ilam province, was convicted by the first branch of the Ilam Revolutionary Court, according to the Hengaw human rights organization.

The court sentenced Hemati to three years, six months, and one day for “attempting to strengthen and confirm the Israeli government,” 15 months and one day for “insulting Ali Khamenei,” and six months related to a Telegram channel.

Hemmati wrote on his personal page that the three years and six months sentence will be enforceable as the harshest punishment, while the additional 15 months will not be implemented under Iranian law.

Hemmati said he first saw his case file and learned the details of the charges and sentence on July 20 when he visited the court to obtain a copy of the verdict.

The psychiatrist and former political prisoner has been repeatedly arrested by security agencies over the past years and has spent time in prison.

He has translated several books on psychotherapy and wrote Prison Notes, containing 103 daily entries from his imprisonment in Dastgerd prison in Isfahan in 2021.
