After 1948, in which Burma became independent from British rule, the political landscape divided into 2 sections. One was military and the other one was Democratic untill 1962. Military section provided muscle for the government while democratic part provided brain.

In 1962, following Coupe, military ran the country till late 80's when widespread corruption, food shortage led to massive student protest. Army crackdown on protesters killed over 3000 ordinary people and displacing thousands. Following crackdown, Aung San Suu Kyi, an Oxford graduate and daughter of Burma's hero military officer formed anti government organization which was promoting democracy in Myanmar. Subsequently, she was being arrested and stayed in house arrest for almost 15 years. It was the same era, Burma changed the name to Myanmar. Burma was reminders of British colonization of the country and Union Myanmar covered different ethnicities.

Aung San Suu Kyi received Nobel prize in 1991 while she was serving her time at house arrest. After almost 2 decades house arrest, she was finally released and won the election in 2016. Pro-democracy voted 255 seats while military fraction voted only 135 seats. Because Aung San Suu Kyi had a British husabnd and 2 British sons, she could't run for presidency so she was appointed as prime minster. During her time she did a lots of reform in Myanmar.  GDP reached to $1400 per Capita nearly double what it was in 2008. Poverty line dropped from 48% to 25%. She also limited military influence from 50% to 25% in the goverment. Censorship was removed in publications. Writers, intellectuals could criticize authorities. For the first time, freedom was breezing over the country and people were really enjoying freedom of speech. Aung San Suu Kyi future plan was to limit military influence to 5% by 2030.  Therefore, military Coup was in shadow already.

In Feb. 2021, military took power by bloody coup. Thousand got shot and killed and thousand were displaced. China support military Coup and U.S support pro democracy people. There is fighting in different states of Myanmar by different ethnic groups and drug Lords. Burmese refugee go to Thailand refugee camps. The men became cheap labor and the girls become prostitutes. People calling for democracy and release of Suu Kyi and others, and they hate China for supporting governing military officers who are "brutal animals" and left and right shoot the protesters on streets. China has very little interest in anything that does not involve direct financial opportunity.

Biden administration implemented sanction on 3 major companies and some top army officers who played major roles  in Coup of Feb. 2021. China, as always,  don't care about human right, human abuse or military dictatorship in any country as long as they can squeez the money to their pockets regardless of who is in power.

If the protest continues, U.S provides weapons,  ammunition to pro-democracy people in combat with military government. On the other hand, China will undoubtly provides military supplies for military government to suppress pro democracy people. Therefore,  we should expect Myanmar becomes another battlefield for proxy war between China and U.S. The scenario of Syria civil war will get repeated, but this time at the heart of Asia.
