Honestly, that’s just one of the questions raised by this vague and alarming statement. “What is unconditional surrender?” Robin Wright, who has been contributing to The New Yorker since 1988, asked over e-mail. “Does Trump mean surrender all aspects of Iran’s nuclear program? Does he mean surrender its ballistic missile arsenal? Does that mean the government must completely cede militarily?

“Also, if the U.S. decides to get involved militarily, will it act offensively against Iran or defensively to protect Israel?” she wrote. “U.S. military engagement in the Middle East has a long record of becoming complicated and costly.”
