I envy you,
South Africa!
Your child became a father
-Brave, wise and kind-
Whose first message,
After he came among the people
From behind prison bars,
Was “I am not a prophet
And everybody is the master
Of her or his destiny.”

Alas!
A man with a turban
Became my master
Who called himself the deputy of God
And sent thousands of Iran’s children
To firing squads.

Today
You bury Madiba
In his birthplace
And I say farewell to him
In exile.

به تو رشگ می‌برم آفريقای جنوبی!

به تو رشگ مي‌برم
ای آفريقای جنوبی!
فرزند تو پدری شد
دلير و خردمند و مهربان
كه چون از پشت ميله‌های زندان
به ميان مردم آمد
نخستين پيامش اين بود
كه "من پيامبر نيستم
و هر كس
خدای سرنوشت خويش است."

افسوس
دستاربندی ناخدای من شد
كه خود را جانشين خدا می‌خواند
و هزاران فرزند ايران را
به جوخه‌های تيرباران سپرد.

امروز "مَديبا" را
در زادگاهش به خاك می‌سپاري
و من در تبعيدگاهم
با او بدرود می‌گويم.
