What Fear

Mahnaz Badihian/

They always scared us with poverty

Now what’s left to be scared of?

We’re all getting poor together

They always scared us about breaking laws

What fear?

They broke all the laws in front of our eyes

And the world was witnessing

They scared us with homelessness

What now?

We’re all becoming homeless

Whether by wars or banks

Or even by loss of our jobs

They scared us with blood and death everyday

What fear? We see blood and killing

And terror on our media everyday

And we’re used to seeing the killing

And bombing everywhere

They scared us over the left becoming the right

And the right becoming the left

What now that neither left

Nor right can solve this vast human misery?

Now our only fear should be separation

The separation of our hands

The separation of our voices.
