Iran has imposed a near-total internet shutdown, with only three per cent of users able to access the global internet in the past 48 hours, according to internet monitoring organization NetBlocks.

The London-based group said the widespread blackout began on Wednesday and represents the most extensive and severe internet disruption in Iran since the November 2019 protests.

It said, “Iran’s internet shutdown has now passed the 48-hour mark; metrics show the nation has been offline for more than two days, leaving loved ones out of touch and citizens ill-informed about the state of conflict with Israel.”

Iran has previously shut down internet access during widespread protests, but NetBlocks said the current blackout is unprecedented in its severity and geographic scope over the past five years.
