Iran is preparing to enforce a law that imposes the death penalty for using Starlink satellite internet.

It is the first time globally that such technology has been explicitly criminalized with capital punishment.

The punishment is included in legislation titled “Intensifying Punishment for Espionage and Cooperation with the Zionist Regime and Hostile Countries Against National Security and Interests,” which has been approved by the Guardian Council.

It has been submitted by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to President Masoud Pezeshkian for implementation.

Parliament approved the bill in June during the 12-day war between Iran and Israel. After review by the Guardian Council, it became law.

Article 5 of the law states that the use, carrying, possession, purchase, sale, or import of unauthorized electronic satellite internet communication devices such as Starlink for personal use is prohibited and subject to sixth-degree imprisonment - six months to two years - and confiscation of equipment.
