Amwaj:

The story: In Iran, a prominent member of the influential Expediency Council has made striking allegations about Russia colluding with Israel and questioned Moscow’s trustworthiness. This comes as Russia is maneuvering in the UN Security Council to avert an imminent showdown between Iran and European governments over the re-imposition of UN sanctions.

In a wide-ranging interview, Mohammad Sadr—a Reformist figure—also claimed that late president Ebrahim Raisi (2021-24) did not die in a helicopter accident, but was assassinated by Israel. The intervention has sparked intense reactions, with many in Iran accusing Sadr of making unfounded allegations.

The coverage: In a video interview with Mohammad Hossein Ranjbaran—an advisor to Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi—Sadr claimed that Israel was aided by Russia during its June 13-24 war against Iran.
In the interview, which was released on Aug. 24, Sadr claimed that "Russia provided Israel with information about Iran’s air defense centers," casting serious doubt on the reliability of ties with Moscow.

Sadr stated that the alleged collusion raised serious questions about the bilateral strategic partnership agreement that was signed with Russia in January this year and ratified by the Iranian parliament in May.

“Of course, this does not mean we should not have relations with Russia. They are our neighbor, and we should engage with them seriously—but without placing our trust in them,” Sadr said. “In other words, we should not fool ourselves into thinking that, in a moment of crisis, they would come to our aid or confront the US on our behalf.”

The judiciary-run Mizan News Agency on Aug. 27 reported that Sadr would be prosecuted for “making false claims,” without specifying the charge.
