IranWire:
Guards at Tehran’s Evin Prison beat inmates in Ward 4 after Israeli strikes struck the facility’s main gate and administrative building on Monday, IranWire has learned.
A source told IranWire that at least two financial crime prisoners were injured during the assault by guards following the Israeli attack on the prison.
The source said smoke accumulated in Hall 4 of Ward 4 after the strikes, causing prisoners there - mostly detained on financial charges - to cough.
Iran’s judiciary-affiliated Mizan news agency released a video from inside Evin Prison, claiming “urgent measures by judicial authorities to protect the health and security of prisoners” had been taken.
Media activist Bahman Darolshafaei reported damage to the women’s ward at Evin but said prisoners there were not hurt.
He said the medical facility and library in Ward 4 were damaged, and several inmates in Ward 8 were wounded.
Israeli forces destroyed Evin’s gates and struck government buildings across Tehran on Monday.
The prison houses political prisoners, activists, and foreign nationals.
The attack came after eight prominent political prisoners wrote to Iran’s judiciary chief requesting temporary release during the war, warning that prisons lack safety measures against missile strikes.
