The war with Iran was undertaken without consideration of the multitude of unanticipated consequences that would follow, and ignorance of the limits of military power to shape political outcomes in an area like the Middle East.  The administration faces the prospect of a long residual conflict that will fall far short of the "unconditional surrender" demanded by Trump.
