  • Incident: Airstrikes
  • Location: Tiyas Airbase, Homs (map)
  • Time/Date: Early April 9

Israeli warplanes reportedly launched targeted airstrikes in Syria, early April 9. Two F-15 fighter aircraft struck the Tiyas Military Airbase (T4) located in Homs Province. Russian Ministry of Defense stated that Syrian air defenses shot down five of eight missiles fired by the Israeli aircraft; however, three missiles hit the base. At least 14 casualties have been reported, including four Iranians, who were killed. Russian military personnel reportedly evacuated the base prior to the attack. Israel has not commented on the action; however, US officials have confirmed the airstrikes. The Tiyas base is located 180 km (110 miles) northeast of Damascus.

Background and Analysis
Israel has carried out dozens of acknowledged and unacknowledged airstrikes in Syria since the civil war began in 2011. These are usually directed against Hizballah, Iranian, and Syrian military targets, including missile factories and weapons shipments. Syria rarely retaliates, presumably because it cannot risk a conflict with Israel while mired in civil war; however, Syrian air defenses fired approximately 24 surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) at an Israeli sortie Feb. 10, downing one Israeli Air Force (IAF) F-16 that crashed in northern Israel. Israel has repeatedly warned against the presence and activities of external parties in the Syrian civil war, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that Israel will intervene militarily in the Syrian civil war if Syrian President Bashar Assad allows Iran to establish a formal military presence in the country. Tensions between Israel and Syria are currently high, and an escalation between the two sides cannot be ruled out.
