Nearly five years ago, after my mother was shot and killed while protecting her students in the Sandy Hook School shooting, Congress had the chance to pass a landmark background check bill to help prevent future tragedies.Instead NRA-backed Senators blocked it. They were quick to send thoughts and prayers, but nevertheless stopped meaningful change and accepted more than $400,000 from the NRA during the 2016 election cycle, firmly planting themselves in the gun lobby’s back pocket.
And after a gunman shot and killed 58 people and hospitalized more than 500 others at a concert in Las Vegas Sunday evening, many of those same politicians were again quick to send thoughts and prayers. And again, NRA leadership will be counting on their cronies in Congress to block absolutely any and every effort to strengthen our gun laws.
But we're not going to let them. Just as my mother did everything in her power to protect her students, we’re going to do everything in our power to loosen the NRA's grip on Congress and stop the gun violence that takes 93 American lives everyday.
But we can’t do it without you.
We’re taking the NRA leadership head on and we need your support. Give $25 or more so we can demand Congress #RejectTheNRA and push for safer gun laws.
While some members of Congress are eager to do theNRA’s bidding, it’s important that we not only fightback against dangerous gun proposals, but also against those who put gun lobby profits and donations over the safety ofAmerican people. This battle is hard fought, but I have absolutely no doubt that we will win.
It's not a matter of if -- it's a matter of when. I'm in this for the long haul, and I hope you are too. Chip in $25 or more so we can put an end to the NRA’s dangerous gun proposals, and help prevent tragedies like the shooting in Las Vegas from happening in the future.
Thank you for standing with me. Thank you for never giving up.
