As the world darkens,
as crass fills the cracks
wisdom could not mend
in our savage heart,

As our fires rage
in the paradise
we took for granted
just behind the house

and cars in earnest
honk in the highways
their memory of
what got left behind,

or now lays ahead,
no school, no good job,
not even a town
to complain about,

the radio rants
of the immigrant.
What we have become.
A ship of foulness,

quarrelling buffoons
at the mercy of
monumental waves
of our own design.

From my children’s lips,
like a lullaby,
I wish for a last
kiss of forgiveness.
