Born in 1959 in Mashhad, Iran, based in New York, Pouran Jinchi’s ink and acrylic paintings on canvas draw primarily from Persian scripture and the Arabic calligraphic tradition. Using text pulled from Persian poetry—the sources for which she prefers not to disclose—Jinchi transforms words and letters into dense swirling clusters of illegible script. Jinchi is concerned with exploring the juncture between Eastern and Western patterns and design, and in recent works has brought together Islamic geometry and iconic Western clothing brands.
