Soup
For Thanksgiving
I soak some black-eyed peas
Until they become soft.
A handful of rice,
A few drops of olive oil,
One spoon of tomato sauce,
A bit of salt and pepper,
Green leaves of spinach
And white cloves of garlic
So charmingly asleep
In their canopy ...
My soup is ready to simmer.
The room is filled with a familiar scent
And I know tonight,
After walking my son home
He will finish his soup
And perhaps ask for another bowl.*

* This poem was one of the eight winning "recipe" poems of a poetry contest called "What's Cookin?" organized by "Writers at Work" and funded by Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department in April 2005. They were published as postcards in an edition of 10000 each and distributed in nearly 300 free postcard racks throughout the Los Angeles area.
آش
چشمبلبلیها را میخیسانم
تا خوب نرم شوند.
مشتی برنج, چند قطره روغن,
قاشقی رب, نمک و فلفل,
برگ های سبز اسفناج
و دانههای سپید سیر
که زیرِ تور به ناز خفتهاند....
آشِ من آمادهی جوشیدن است.
بوی آشنایی اتاق را آکنده
و من می دانم که امشب
پس از همراهیِ پسرم تا خانه
او آشش را تمام خواهد کرد
و شاید یک کاسهی دیگر هم بخواهد.*

* این شعر یکی از هشت شعر برندهی مسابقهی دستور شاعرانهی آشپزی "چی سر باره؟" بود که در آوریل ۲۰۰۵ با حمایت مالی ادارهی امور فرهنگی کلانشهر لس آنجلس برگزار شد. هر یک از این هشت شعر برنده روی ده هزار کارت پستال چاپ شد و در دسترس مشتریان بیش از سیصد رستوران کلانشهر لس آنجلس قرار گرفت.
