Russian troops have started a week of joint military drills with their counterparts from China and other countries. The six-day Kavkaz 2020 exercises got under way on September 21, 2020, in the Astrakhan region as well as in the Black and Caspian seas. Along with host Russia and China, forces from Armenia, Belarus, Myanmar, Pakistan and Iran were also involved in the training. Officials say the drills were not envisioned as a response to any specific threat, but rather were held to improve relations and enhance regional security.
