Bihzad was known in the late 15th century as the best painter and illustrator of Herat, a city in the west Afghanistan. He was the head of the royal ateliers in Herat during the reign of the Timurid ruler Hosayn Bayqara till 1506. Later, in the early 16th century he moved to Tabriz, today in the north-west of Iran, where he was employed at the Safavid court.
