Two years after Iran nuclear deal, a mixed picture

FRANCE 24: It's been two years since a landmark deal curbed Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions. At the time, many Iranians celebrated, hoping the deal would open relations with the West and boost the ailing economy. But two years on, some sanctions remain in place and many Iranians still struggle with daily life. However, foreigners, including French entrepreneurs, remain hopeful and continue to invest in the country. Our Tehran correspondents report.

As I said at the time, the Nuclear Deal was a godsend for the US, the NATO allies, Israel and the Persian Gulf nations. The Islamic Republic shot down its nuclear weapons infrastructure and in return got to keep a few thousand obsolete centrifuges and got its hands on its frozen assets (roughly $56 billion by the Treasury Dept. estimates), and was allowed to spend its money on Boeing, Airbus and the European goods and not Chinese and Indian junk.

And if it wasn’t for Trump’s stupidity and ignorance, we could have done a similar deal with the Regime’s missile program, but Trump managed to antagonize our allies and China, and as a result, Total and a few other companies are now investing in Iran, in defiance of Trump.

There was never supposed to be anything in this deal for the Iranian people, but their president sold them unrealistic expectations.
