STORYLINE:
A group of unarmed Iranian protesters were holed up on a Lufthansa jetliner at Brussels airport on Thursday, and a spokesman for the group said they were on a hunger strike and were prepared to die for their cause, the overthrow of the Iranian government.
A man who gave only his first name, Ira, in a telephone interview with The Associated Press from the plane said they won''t be moved "unless we die and they take our bodies form the aeroplane."
He said the group of protesters numbered 79, including four children and 22 women, and wanted the US, the EU and Russia to sign a statement to stop co-operating with the Iranian government.
Police said there were only 59 passengers refusing to the leave the plane, out of the total 103 that took the flight from Frankfurt, Germany.
The standoff began shortly after the flight landed at 3 pm local time (1400GMT).
Ira, who said he was originally from Iran, said the protesters had launched a hunger strike to highlight their support for Iran''s late Shah and wanted to draw attention to Iran''s problems.
He said there were eight American nationals on board, three Swedes and "many English nationals."
Ramir Atashgar, from the Assembly for a Monarchy for Iran, told reporters gathered in the airport terminal that they wanted the leaders of the EU to stop supporting the current Iranian government.
Several police vans were parked alongside the plane at the airport terminal, which had shut down for the night.
Airport spokesman Paul De Backer said the protest was not disrupting other flights.
European Union and NATO officials said the organisations were not involved in negotiations to end the standoff.

Shahrvand Reza and Shahbanou Farah take note that these were the young people you let down the day you called for a "Referendum" and turned your backs on the pledge of loyalty to the 1906 Constitution in accordance to the Shah's last will and endorsing the establishment of your unconstitutional shora !
There were monarchist activists ready to take on the battle early on
This incident dates back to 2005 ... even prior to the 2009 upheavels two monarchists of the Anjoman PAdeshahi were executed
Mohammad Reza Ali Zamani, and Arash Rahmanipour,
These were the type of kids who went and Demonstrated in Pasargard shouting Javid Shah and congratulated you for your birthday yet which you have shamefully branded "fascists" !!
Shahrvand Reza instead prefered to go on a hunger strike for Akbar Ganji and support the likes of NIAC'ers like Ramin Jahanbegloo ...
Just shows how reckless and bee Hovyat RP has become that he squandered whatever political capital he could have had as the heir and custodian of his father's legacy.
And he is paying the political price for his own lack of genuine belief and lack of patriotism !
