competition to be the most stupid—Nathalie Loiseau, French Europe minister
The left’, or to be fair the voices that dominate the far left in politics and culture, became a regressive force after the Cold War. Its leaders allied with and excused regimes that were the enemies of socialism, feminism and liberalism: Iran, Saddam’s Iraq, Milosevic’s Serbia, Putin’s Russia, and Hamas and other clerical fascist versions of Islam.—Nick Cohen
If you are finding all this discomfiting, you are not alone. Somehow we have managed to produce a situation where democratically elected politicians are threatening substantial harm to their own countries as a bargaining tactic. The tactic is credible because accidents happen. At least we can comfort ourselves that long-range bombers are not involved.—Tim Hartford, FT
I’m a little skeptical that a thieving thug under international sanctions is the right man to be Iran’s highest-ranking judicial official.—Secretary of State - Pompeo
Politicians come and go but the problems they have created for people remain—Donald Tusk
Trump is reviving anti-Americanism for a new generation—Edward Luce
One of the problems is Russia is so good at spreading violence—Boris Johnson
Instead of hyperventilating about Mr Trump, Europeans might want to reflect on what got them into this mess. —Wolfgang Münchau of the FT
Iran is a 3rd world under-developed country run by thugs who have delusions of grandeur. Every single one of the countries under Iran's "protection" now, hate Iran. The idea that US sanctions are primarily intended to hurt the Iranian people, rather than admitting that the coming pain will be at the hands of the Bazaris and Speah, is the height of ignorance, and shows the same old delusional tendencies of refusing to admit that WE are the problem.—Who is Bruce?
In some cases, intense hatred shown against Western democracies may be prompted by self-loathing, a common disease in many other societies including Russia. The only difference is that in Western societies giving expression to that self-loathing is risk-free, indeed somehow chic, while it is severely repressed in Russia. —Amir Taheri
