Actually Iran is worse than racial Apartheid. With racial aparthied you could make the socio economic argument why Whites were better than Blacks, and why they deserved to have all of the power. It was self fulfilling prophecy no doubt but the fact under apartheid was that whites were indeed better than the Blacks under their feet.
With Iran, there is only the one gene argument. By Birth, regardless of your socio economic status in the Iranian social order, if you are a woman, you are a legally lesser organism than a man.
Although that is a ridiculous assumption ad there is no reasonable argument for it, legally, or by law, this is the case. Legally and by law, women are deeemed less than men.
This is why Iran is worse than Apartheid.
In any case, I think both Pahlavi and IRI governments done more damage to women's right than anyone else. Each by not understanding and overdoing things in their own right. Both acted excessively in their own ways.
However, Iran is NOT the only country that has this problem.
ALSO, children don't have rights too. What do you call that? Sad times, very sad times indeed.
How exactly did Pahlavi dynasty damaged women's right when there was no such a concept as women's right in Iran before the great Reza Shah came to power! If anything Iranian women owe a big debt to Reza Shah and his son for their efforts to liberate women from the islamists who kept them in chain for 1400 plus years.
Dear MRX
They damaged by providing too much freedom too soon. You or I as a responsible parent would not give too much freedom instantly to our children. It should be provided gradually and this is so particularly at a national level. Your great Reza shah done just what a responsible parent would not do. I do not need to tell you how it was before Pahlavi. That is why Iran needed its freedom gradually. Like for example we hear so much about freedom in US, but only recently gay marriage has become legalised. US government could have done it in 1960's when sexual freedom became almost norm. But they did not do it then did they?
too much freedom too soon
Funny! I always heard and still hear from shah haters that there was not enough freedom and democratization was taking too long!
As for the great Reza Shah I am not worthy of this man and what he did for Iran but that is different subject for another time.
Dear MRX
Two points;
1- My problem with Shah is more on democracy and security than freedom. ALSO for your information freeddom and democracy are rather different,
2- Maybe I should have said;
too much UNAPPROPRIATE freedom too soon (after all Iran then was an Islamic country too)
I ,as a member of Iranian community who seen unjustice, am worthy of your Reza shah and that is why researched him. And as the result can tell you his and his son's action forced a country to fall in the hands of mullahs, not mentioning this family was also responsible for permanently destroying 2500 years of monarchy.
what is UNAPPROPRIATE freedom? and exactly how long or how fast should these kind of freedom be delivered?so we should have waited another five hundred years for women to be allowed to study, drive or vote or anything? or may be even longer than that? No senior! some times you have to take the bowl with it's horn and take him out of the mud whether he likes it or not!
The entire region has seen a rise in islamic movement, call it revival or what ever you like ( from India all the way to Arfica )and all that is caused by Reza shah and his son? Nope we are in this boat becuase of our backwardness and our psychee as a result of cultural destruction it's that simple! if any one is to be blamed it's the Ghajar dynasty who gave us one hundred years of stagnation otherwise we would have been far ahead at the turn of century. We might have still ended of up with this mumbo jumbo republic any way (Khorafat and jahl is really big among vast majority of Iranian population including highly educated one's) but it most likely would have been less bloody that is all.
