The NYT ran an OPED in support of the mandatory hijab for female chess players visiting Iran for a tournament. A most appalling argument! What if the legendary Ray Charles or the Beatles had not refused to play for segregated audiences in the "south" in the US?....This is a conscious effort to surgically remove Iran from feminist history by giving it "special status" and singularizing a plight that belongs to a global movement for equality as a mere local confrontation with a band of clerics.

The NYT ran an OPED yesterday in support of the mandatory hijab for female chess players visiting Iran for a tournament. A most appalling argument! What if the legendary Ray Charles or the Beatles had not refused to play for segregated audiences in the "south" in the US? Where would the Civil Rights Movement be today? This is a conscious effort to surgically remove Iran from feminist history by giving it "special status" and singularizing a plight that belongs to a global movement for equality as a mere local confrontation with a band of clerics. Anyone who argues on behalf of continued segregation and oppression, in this case of the hijab, is wholly ignorant of how these wars have been won over the centuries. A sheer lack of vision and imagination is clearly implied too.
