Some years ago Philip Glass was on NPR, talking about his childhood. His father was a music shop owner with a pretty sophisticated taste in music so habitually he would bring home samples of what he carried at his store and would listen to them for long hours. He had a particular interest for records that sat on the shelves for a long time and as a businessman was curious to know why there was very little interest from general public for those recordings, among them works by Shostakovich, Bartok and Schoenberg. In the show Glass joked about him and his brother per their father’s orders would spread those records on the bed and jump on them so that they could be returned to the distributer as damaged merchandise. So, naturally, he considers his father as the biggest influence on him developing a taste for modern sound from an early age.
