Syria's U.S.-backed Kurds are getting indirect help from an unlikely source in their war against Turkey in the northwestern region of Afrin: President Bashar Assad.

In a country currenlty engulfed by multiple conflicts - with Israel trying to blunt Iranian influence, Russia attempting to build a premanent presence and NATO allies Turkey and the U.S. on a collision course in the northwest - Assad's aid to the Kurds is just the latest bizarre turn in a complicated conflict.
