PRINCETON -- Graduate students, faculty and others in the Princeton University community have planned a vigil Friday to show support for XiYue Wang, the graduate student imprisoned in Iran.
XiYue Wang, a doctoral student in the history department, visited Iran between January and March of 2016 to to attend a Farsi language program, a university statement said. He returned to Iran on May 1, 2016 to continue studying and to conduct research on his dissertation on 19th century Eurasia.
In August 2016, Wang was accused of archiving thousands of Iranian documents and having connections to American intelligence agencies. He was arrested, and in April, was sentenced to 10 years in Iran's Evin Prison.
