Australian:
Iran is shaping up as the biggest loser from Donald Trump’s Middle Eastern visit.
In words and deeds, the US President has targeted and isolated Tehran during his first trip abroad in a way that Barack Obama never did.
It puts Iran on notice that its sponsorship of terrorism, its ugly alliance with the Assad regime in Syria and its meddling in Iraq will not be tolerated.
This paves the way for at least four years of heightened tensions between old enemies, reversing the tentative detente struck by Obama with Tehran.
The White House is in the middle of a wholesale review of Iran policy, including whether it will seek to break the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal. The decisions it makes in coming months on Iran will be felt across the world. It is a key moment for the Middle East.
By the time the President leaves for Europe, Iran will be left in no doubt about how far the earth has moved beneath it since Trump took office.
