Only one ancient portrait preserves the image of Darius III, the king who lost two great battles to Alexander the Great and ceded control of the Persian Empire. A Roman mosaic artist of the first century, probably working from an older Greek painting, depicted Darius at the moment of defeat, stretching his arm and casting a helpless gaze toward his hard-charging enemy, Alexander. Beside him in his chariot, a driver whips the horses to gallop away from the action. Darius, as captured in this poignant scene, is running for his life.
