Two Years After Trump’s Victory, Voters Erect an Impediment to His Power
The New York Times: When the new Congress is sworn in this January, Democrats will be able to curb Mr. Trump’s legislative ambitions and, armed with subpoena power, flex their oversight muscles to initiate investigations into allegations of misconduct by the president and his administration. If the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, finds substantial evidence of illegal conduct during the 2016 election, he now will have a receptive wing of government to pursue his findings.
“Tonight, the American people have demanded accountability from their government and sent a clear message of what they want from Congress,” Representative Jerrold Nadler, the New York Democrat in line to be chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said on Twitter. The president “may not like it, but he and his administration will be held accountable to our laws and to the American people.”
But after eight years in the minority, Democrats hoping to reclaim the White House in 2020 will also have to prove they are interested in governing — and temper the liberal ambitions of the party’s most ardent left-wingers.
“It’s like being the rescue team at an 88-car pileup: Who knows where to begin?” asked Representative Jamie Raskin, Democrat of Maryland. “I think the key principle is that we’ve got to make progress on the real problems of the country.”
Democratic leaders have already said they plan to use their first month in the House majority to advance sweeping changes to future campaign and ethics laws, including outlawing the gerrymandering of congressional districts and restoring key enforcement provisions to the Voting Rights Act. They also intend to press for infrastructure investment and legislation to control the climbing costs of prescription drugs — initiatives that will test whether Mr. Trump is willing to work with them >>>
Not only he lost the House, he also lost a whole bunch of governor races. But Trump being a transactional carpet bagger, he will quickly cut a deal with Schumer/Pelosi.
You are dead wrong! More GoP Senate races and gubernatorial contests were won especially in Georgia and Florida and Connecticut and Massachusetts and South Carolina and....! BTW, a 747 has 4 engines not 2, JJ jan! And simple civics lesson for you, it's the Senate that has a lot of power and influence not the House and guess who gained more seats in the Senate!?!?
They also intend to press for infrastructure investment and legislation to control the climbing costs of prescription drugs — initiatives that will test whether Mr. Trump is willing to work with them.”
Whenever Trump talked about infrastructure more than two years ago, he was ridiculed and accused of wanting his company/family to benefit from the lucrative projects that would follow. Each time Trump talked about the infrastructure in the US, he would mention the infrastructures of the UAE member states.
BTW, why didn’t Obama do anything about the infrastructure during his 8 years in office?
We know and even Obama mumbled the fact that the so-called Obamacare was what Mitt Rumney originally used in the state of Massachusetts, where he was the governer.
Towards the the end of his presidency, frustrated Obama made two outrageous statements, one about Obamacare and the other was about his slogan, “Yes, we can.” With regards to the former he said, if you have any problems with the system, go talk to Mitt Romney. And regarding the latter he said, by “we” I meant you and I together. Not thinking if people could do anything, they wouldn’t need him in the White House
Last but not least, the QE idea that is claimed to have helped the economic recovery was part of GW’s legacy and not Obama’s
