I take Azad to School
Every morning
I take Azad to school.
Waiting around the bus stop on Pico
Veterans continue the war.
A man looks at Azad
From the corner of his eye
And suddenly throws his hat
Into the street.
Blue Bus 7 stops short.
Azad says: "transfer!"
And waves his white slip in the air.
In the rear seat
A woman sells infant formula.
Azad waves to a car behind,
Changes the bus number
And shouts in triumph : "11!"
Today is Monday:
The day of buying fortunes from a Korean shop.
He says: "A plastic watch again!"
I say: "Fortune has wings!"
And hand him his lunchbox.
He throws me a kiss behind the bars.
My preschool had barred doors
And our local prison in Isfahan, too.
I always return by the back street.
Homes are still yawning
And smell of tortillas and coffee.
Yellow leaves are everywhere.
I pass by Woodlawn Cemetery.
Vines push through bars
Asking about my first wife.
After the abortion, she came home
And said in tears: "I killed a person!"
When she was executed in Tehran
I understood what she meant.
I cannot see the passing cars
But I hear their hums
From a nearby freeway.
I reach a little Adventist Church.
Will there be a resurrection?
All box woods are trimmed evenly,
On the window ledges, there are no flowerpots
And no doves coo under the half-domes.
I climb the wooden stairs.
A Mexican neighbor plays guitar
And an Ethiopian sings blues.
For another day
I have taken Azad to school.

From a holocaust-surviving poet: "Dear Majid, I continue to read and admire your poetry. It's sheer genius the way you combine the old and the new, your native country and your adopted one. Do you also feel like two people? When I looked at the newspaper picture of Aleppo I saw Warsaw in its post WWll ruins. Your friend"
