Na, you are overly sensetive. cheshm badomi is not an insult.
Yup..... MrsY is Right......cheshm badoomi is not racist...........but moozlim is....Yup...Yup....somethiong like this and that....
Who the heck is Mrs. Y man!!!
You know i have been losing sleep over this!!!
It's like a shoplifter who also is a rapist. Then, shoplifting pales in comparison. With western standards, of course it is. But, in Iran, that's beyond redemption.
Seriously, if what you read was true , this show how out of whack and deep-down racists iranians are and how they have been able to fool people around the world.
And that is sad.
You have a point there Mehrdad. In a country where gays are executed for being gay, I guess calling someone "slanted eye" because of his/her Asian features is not such a big deal.
In general I have found Iranians to be a bunch of racists. Also in this case self deceiving. basking in glory of winning a football match when they have to go begging around the world to import everything from US built planes to Chinese built everything else.
Does this mean Iranians are lazy and stupid as well as Racist?
Good blog.
Well, they import shovel sticks from Indonesia, the shovel itself from China, and labor from Afghanistan. So, to move and remove a little turd or manure, Iran needs the help of at least 3 countries.
OMG!
Let's see if the Chinese website has an article with the title, "The victory of the hairy men" or "The victory of the men with humongous nose"?
Then, they will probably claim real "Persians" are too pure to be hairy....
Hey Yolanda,
Iranians may have borrowed the expression from English "almond eyes" or "almond-shaped eyes."
Hi GR,
I thought almond shaped eyes are different from slanted eyes.
That was not the argument. Iranians do call Asian eyes, "badoomi," but not as a racial slur. Iranians' racism is irrelevant in this case.
Yolanda,
Here's a "clean shaven" sexy Iranian. Haha
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=P5mtclwloEQ
Calling a whole group of people "almond eye" is neither cute, nor a term of endearment. It's insensitive and racist. It's like calling a group of people "boy" because of their color of skin. The world has changed since the 1940s and 50s.
Iranians are master racists...what do you think of the concept of "Haaji Firooz" (should be pirooz, actually, but anyway), or all the ethnic jokes?
What about comments I've seen here by some posters regarding Indians or others simply because they said or done something to the dislike of these characters?
The world has changed as a whole, problems is that humans change very very slowly......
I use the term boy all the time and i don't mean to convey racism by it:)
AO,
All racist remarks are insensitive, but not every insensitive remark is racist.
It might be true that some iranians would go out of their way to insult arabs and indians and what not, but i'd like to see proof that the same gesture is not reciprocated by them.
Can we say with a straight face that all indians and arabs fully respect iranians and never, ever call them any demeaning and degrading names?
You have a very good point there Doc. Arabs (especially those of the Persian Gulf region) are extremely racist--not just toward Iranians, but also toward Indians, Sri Lankans, Flipinos, etc. who work there as migrant workers and servants. All you have to do is Google the subject and you'll see news articles about how those folks are essentially kept in those countries under what can only be called a slave ownership system
Doc,
Arabs and Indians can be as racist as any other people.
"Respect" for Iranians? Do Iranians have "respect" for each other? Do Indians? Do Arabs? Do Americans?
That is just sad AO Jan. I have heard stories as well and i just shake my head everytime.
GR jan
That is a whole separate issue. Not having respect for people around you and where you live and not getting respect could not serve as a justification that it is ok to behave that way towards others outside that community.
The point i am making is that you or anyone else for that matter could not point the blaming finger at iranians or americans and calling them racist, While to a great extent that same sentiment exist on the other side of the equation.
You've got Arabs that will never miss a chance to call iranians names and give you that dirty look , and you have iranians who never miss a chance to call arabs "soosmar khar" or barefooted arabs!
Doctor Jaan,
"Many" does not mean all or even a majority. It only means there are enough people that such sentiments are observable. I was talking about the facts of life. I wasn't comparing Iranians to people from other countries. I used that statement in a context. Iranians' racism fades in comparison to racist sentiments held by the people of the countries you mentioned. And the list is not limited to those two countries. For starters, try living in neighborhoods where citizens of certain countries have "occupied" in the heart of Europe, the US or Canada. I don't think even your most desperate realtor would recommend such neighborhoods.
GR jan
I respectfully disagree. It does not matter whether we are talking about a majority or not. A ham sandwich is still a ham sandwich with mayo on it. It does not change the fact that it exists , i am not talking about the intensity of it or its various degrees, It is there.
I believe that i am using my remarks in the same context as yours, and i have to say that i have quite opposite experience as you do, Here where i live, In my town i see iranians who have lived in the states for ages and still hold their noses and make the rudest comments when an Indian -american, who was born and raised right here, passes by them.
GR
I am not denying that.
But realize this: Just because it exists in a more intense and in-your-face form amongst Japanese for instance,it does take away from the fact that Iranians are by far one of the most racially prejudiced people on the face of the earth, albeit in a more insidious and subtle ways, in many cases.
And also , Calling a japanese woman who marries a foreigner a "whore" is not racism per se, in comparison with a japanese calling a Korean/Foreigner A racially motivated term. It is not the same thing , IMHO.
A real korean has a higher chance of being on a japanese Sh...list for a longer time than a japanese woman who marries a korean! That is true racism. Like calling Indians or arabs "najes".
Doc,
The Japanese are known for their xenophobia, racism and mysogenism.
Until several years ago, if a Japanese guy married a foreign woman she would automatically became a Japanese citizen. But that was not true about a foreigner marrying a Japanese woman. This law was in place for different reasons including the Japanese hatred of foreigners and their mysogenism. To most Japanese men a woman is only good for giving birth to their children. So, when a Japanese man married a foreign woman their child would automatically became Japanese. But that was not true when a Japanese woman maried a foreigner. One of their ministers said exactly what I'm telling you. Also, if xenophobia is not racism, then I'm not sure what racism is.
Another reason was that most women wold divorce the bastards as soon as they got their citizenship.haha
GR
So what? I never said that they were not xenophobe!! Did I?
Everything that you said applies exacly and directly in The iran that is governed by the IRI. SO as you can see We can easily categorize iranians in the same manner. I would dare to go further and say it is even worst, in certain cases.
GR jan
I find it amazing and ironic that you use the word "most japanese" while you objected to my use of "many" in a previous comment.
The gist of what i am saying is that, you can not deny the impacts of racism , xenophobia or whatever other names you will put on it, on various scales, large or small. In a larger and more personal scale, when the majority does it you are right, it affects lives and devastates, but even if Iranians do it on a more minimal scale than the Japanese or indians or what have you, That does not make their crime any less significant , and as i am sure you would concur, helps damage their reputation worldwide.
Doctor Jaan,
The following was in reference to a comment I addressed to AO. I clarified my own usage of "many."
"Many" does not mean all or even a majority. It only means there are enough people that such sentiments are observable.
Here's what I wrote in my own comment.
"Although many Iranians have undeniable racist sentiments towards Arabs, did I take your comment as racially charged? Hardly."
The irnoy is that the same very hoity-toity olagh-savar iroonies belittling the almond-eyed Chinese will end up not qualifying due to losing to their superior camel-jockey Saudi Arabian and Gutteri cousins!
Dear AO, strictly speaking it maybe racist. But 24/7 users on this are racist against their own nation BUT you never complained before. Why is that?
Because: 1) I don't have the time or the energy to engage every commenter on this site; and 2) we have a handful of people on this site whom you're talking about, versus the official media outlet for a country of 80 million.
OK people.
1. Every country has this racist shit in their genes to some degree. Persians against Arabs and Afghans and Torks. Arabs against Persians and Africans. Chinese against blacks. Japs against non-Japs. WASPS against non-WASPS. Turks against Greeks and Bulgarians. etc etc. This trait is a remnant of our tribal instincts from our early ancestral years. We had to cluster into groups and fight other groups for resources in order to survive.
2. Is "eye-slanted" a racist slur in Farsi? It definitely is. But the reason you dont hear much about it is because people are de-sensitized to it. Like "kaka-siyah". Or "Tork-e Khar". But the racism does exist. Only, like many other things, everyone's in denial about our racist attitudes. Until an Afghan walks by. Or we find out that the guy who messed up our bank check is a Tork.
I mean, think about it: How would you feel if 'USA Today' ran a title on the front page tomorrow morning like this:
"Team-USA beats hairy necked Iranians 2-1 in World Cup game opener"
Fesenjoon
Are you sure about the "Everyone is in denial about our racist attitude" part ?
going a little too fast there partner:)
"Minstrel shows were popular before slavery was abolished, sufficiently so that Frederick Douglass described blackface performers as "...the filthy scum of white society, who have stolen from us a complexion denied them by nature, in which to make money, and pander to the corrupt taste of their white fellow citizens."[9] Although white theatrical portrayals of black characters date back to as early as 1604,[10] the minstrel show as such has later origins." Wikipedia
Come on Doc. Work with me. When we say everyone, what we mean is the majority of the population under the Normal distribution curve. Not every single dooneh person of course.
Another example of how we are not sensitized to racism, even though we are racist:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/iran-blog/2016/jan/14/african-slavery-in-qajar-iran-in-photos
But see, we dont call this racism, because having a kaneez is Halal in Islam. So "whats the big deal?" (supposedly)
Fesenjoon - this is the reason I love you man...your comments are--as always--right on!!!!
Fesenjoon.
I am trying man!
It just that i wish you were a bit more clear on the language. Now i know what you meant. Thanks:)
The other day I took my family to the county park where they had the 13th celebrations. Around 500 people were already there when we arrived. So after setting up the picnic table, I go over to a small group of seemingly friendly older gentlemen chatting close by just to meet new people and make new friends. As I join their conversation, one of the older guys tells me: "you're not Iranian. You speak Farsi well." I'm like: "umm, yes I am Iranian". And he's like "no you're not. You don't look like an Iranian." And I'm like "well my grandfather was a colonel of the Shah and my parents are from..." at which point he interrupts me: "well you don't look Iranian". Even though the condescending piece of shit annoyed the hell out of me, I managed to keep the ehteram of the group and let him have his way with a respectful smile. But the old fart did get under my skin. Here I am trying to approach these people, and only after 30 seconds of acquaintance they manage to fuck things up. I mean, I'm a goddamn professor in the school of medicine. I'm in charge of the curriculum of 60 residents. I drive a top of the line 7-series BMW. I'm 6'2" tall and better looking than he is. I even used to work as Ahmad Khomeini's interpreter when I lived in that godforesaken country. And what is this guy? A carpet store owner? A baghal? The fool probably hasn't been to Iran since 1957 or something. And besides, what is an Iranian supposed to look like anyway? Racist dumbass fuckers.

Pardon my curiosity....
But a few years back i recall you mentioning that you were an Astrophysics professor at some Ivy League school....A few months back you said you were a residency coordinator for Three medical schools in three different states, and now you are a professor in one medical school.
Dude , you sure as heck change jobs, responsibilities , way too fast!!!
